Climate change in Mongolia: Mongolian Government holds special meeting in Gobi desert

ULAN BATOR, August 29 (Xinhua) -- The Mongolian government Friday held a full cabinet meeting in the sandy valley of "Gashuunii Hooloi" of Bayandalai county of South Gobi province, about 670 km away from Ulan-Bator.

The valley was chosen specifically for the meeting as it has been very much affected by desertification. What are now barren stretches of sand have been arable lands only 5 years ago.

Batbold Sukhbaatar, Mongolia's prime minister, said, "Mongolia is feeling the impact of the global climate change. Global warming is observed in Mongolia more than most of other regions in the world. Between 2009-2010, our country was hit by the harshest winter in decades and lost 20 percent of our livestock animals."

New Austrian climate maps for 1971-2000

Climate being in constant flux, availability of higher resolved digital elevation models and further development of gridding methods gave reasons for updating the most frequently used climate maps for Austria from 1961–1990 to 1971–2000. To achieve a station density as high as possible, data from eleven national and foreign institutes were collected and gaps filled. According to the climate parameter, different geostatistical interpolation methods (including regionalised global multilinear regressions, geographically weighted regressions and curve fitting to other parameter) were applied.

The resulting 19 grids concern temperature, precipitation, snow and sunshine parameters. The map images can be obtained via the ZAMG-website. For scientific and planning purposes, the digital grids can be requested by e-mail.

Creation of ecological corridors in Ukraine

A manual on stakeholder involvement and landscape-ecological modelling to connect protected areas, based on a pilot in the Carpathians.

The manuel is the outcome of the project "Realising trans-boundary ecological connectivity in the Ukrainian Carpathians" which has been implemented successfully in the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Ukraine and the Netherlands Ministry of Agriculture and Food Quality with financial support from the Netherlands International Biodiversity Policy Programme (BBI).

Knowledge Exchange Call of the Natural Environment Research Council (UK)

NERC-funded researchers are continually adding to our knowledge of the environment. By working with policy makers and regulators, industry and business, non-governmental organisations and charities we can develop appropriate ways to address environmental issues. Sometimes the outcomes of our research can be translated directly into products and services.

Making sure that our science is contributing to the economic well-being and quality of life in the UK and around the world is an integral part of our business. The process by which we do this is called knowledge exchange, and we have a Knowledge Exchange Strategy to help us maximise the use of our science.

How can we improve information delivery to support conservation and restoration decisions?

Journal    Biodiversity and Conservation

Abstract

Incorporating science into resource conservation and management is becoming increasingly important, but it is not yet clear how to provide information to decision makers most effectively. To evaluate sources of information used to support the management and conservation of California’s riparian bird habitat, we distributed a questionnaire to restoration practitioners and public and private land managers. We asked respondents to rate the importance and availability of different sources of information they use to inform their decisions. Synthetic reviews and peer-reviewed publications both received high importance and availability ratings. Web-based tools received low importance and availability ratings. One-on-one interactions between ecologists and decision makers received high importance ratings, similar to those of peer-reviewed publications and synthetic reviews, but their availability was rated lower than any other method of decision support. Our results suggest that the decision makers we surveyed are already using a wide variety of information, but that prioritizing one-on-one interactions between scientists and decision makers will enhance the delivery of all sources of information.
