Climate change in Mongolia: Mongolian Government holds special meeting in Gobi desert

ULAN BATOR, August 29 (Xinhua) -- The Mongolian government Friday held a full cabinet meeting in the sandy valley of "Gashuunii Hooloi" of Bayandalai county of South Gobi province, about 670 km away from Ulan-Bator.

The valley was chosen specifically for the meeting as it has been very much affected by desertification. What are now barren stretches of sand have been arable lands only 5 years ago.

Batbold Sukhbaatar, Mongolia's prime minister, said, "Mongolia is feeling the impact of the global climate change. Global warming is observed in Mongolia more than most of other regions in the world. Between 2009-2010, our country was hit by the harshest winter in decades and lost 20 percent of our livestock animals."
